Bushido Kempo

SDS Bushido Kempo is a non-classical, American martial art focusing on self-defense and realistic combat training. It incorporates the traditional values of the martial arts, advocates use of respect and protocol, and embraces the warrior spirit of the Japanese Samurai. The "core" of Bushido Kempo, it's technical foundation, is derived from four martial art disciplines: Combat Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Aiki-Jitsu, and Kobu-Jutsu (weaponry).

Bushido Kempo utilizes fast and powerful hand strikes; low level kicks; grappling skills such as throws, jointlocks, chokes, and pressure points. Bushido Kempo focuses on the practical, combat use of weapons such as wooden staffs of different sizes, edged weapons (knife and katana), and the nunchaku. Martial arts breathing techniques are taught, along with the development of internal energy. Bushido Kempo uses both the hard and soft concepts of the martial arts in order to achieve maximum efficiency in combat and personal protection.

Bushido Kempo is referred to as an "open system" martial art because, in addition to its own "core" group of techniques, it also incorporates techniques and concepts from other martial arts, which eventually become part of its "extended system".

As an "open system", Bushido Kempo allows qualified black belts from other martial art styles to crossrank their belts into Bushido Kempo. This gives them the opportunity for advanced training and promotion to higher black belt levels in Bushido Kempo, while still maintaining the heritage of their original style by utilizing the flexibilities of the "extended system" in Bushido Kempo.

The strength and growth of Bushido Kempo comes from the simplistic efficiency and devastating effectiveness of its "core" techniques, as well as from the diversity of its black belts and of the various other martial arts that are incorporated into its "extended system." The "core" system provides Bushido Kempo its identity and stability, and the "extended" system of Bushido Kempo provides change and growth through research, development and inclusion of new techniques and concepts.

Bushido Kempo is a division of Self-Defense Systems International Combat Martial Arts Federation with its headquarters based in Oklahoma. The founder and grandmaster of Bushido Kempo is Professor Gary Dill, 10 th degree black belt, who has trained thousands of students and black belts across the United States and internationally.

Principles of Bushido Kempo:

Simplicity....simple and direct execution of techniques with no fancy, flashy acrobatic moves which detract from the reality of combat, individuality....adaptation of techniques so they work efficiently for the individual, focus on combat....focus on realistic, combat related training for self-defense in the street, void of rituals and aesthetics, openminded....maintaining the core system, while incorporating techniques and concepts from other martial arts that contribute to overall combat efficiency, Goju....blending of the hard (go) and the soft (ju) martial art techniques, adapting....adapting to the three ranges of combat (punching, kicking, and grappling), and adapting to opponents with different fighting backgrounds.

Respect....promote respect and understanding of all other martial arts and black belts; use of protocol and titles; and provide an atmosphere of brotherhood within Self-Defense Systems International, and among its friends and affiliate martial art organizations.
